When to Lock a Discussion Instead of Removing It

Locking a topic can be a better option than deleting it when the existing discussion still contains useful information.

Consider locking a discussion when the original question has been resolved but new replies repeatedly take it off topic, when an announcement should remain visible without receiving responses, or when a discussion needs to be preserved for reference.

Deletion is more appropriate for content that should not remain publicly accessible.

Whenever possible, make moderation decisions understandable to members so they know how to avoid the same issue in future discussions.
