A good forum structure should make it obvious where a new discussion belongs without presenting members with too many choices.
Start with a few broad sections based on the main reasons people visit your community. Add subforums only when a section receives enough discussions to justify separating them.
Use short forum names and descriptions that explain what belongs there. If members repeatedly post the same type of discussion in the wrong place, that is often a sign that the current structure or wording needs improvement.
Review the structure periodically. Communities evolve, and the forum hierarchy should evolve with them.
